Soldiers from Company B, 4th Battalion,
23rd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker
Brigade Combat Team, U.S. Army Pacific,
move into position for the first-ever
live fire exercise with Strykers at Fort
Richardson, Alaska.
Fort Richardson, Alaska, is located amid picturesque,
majestic, snow-capped mountains, lakes, rivers and glaciers.
The area abounds with wildlife. Located within the
Municipality of Anchorage and adjacent to Elmendorf Air Force
Base, Fort Richardson receives great civilian support from the
community. Fort Richardson is 2,090 miles north of Seattle,
Washington, and 300 miles south of Fairbanks, Alaska. The area
is considered high cost because of its unique location. The
base operator's phone number is (907)384-1110 or DSN
317-384-1110.
History
Fort Richardson was established in 1940 and moved to its
present location in 1950.
Mission
Fort Richardson is the home of the 4th Brigade Combat Team
(Airborne), 25th Infantry Division (Light), a part of the
United States Army Alaska (USARAK). USARAK stands at the
forefront of protecting America's interests in the volatile
Asian Pacific region. We are the U.S. military's most
centrally located worldwide transportation hub while our joint
training opportunities, breathtaking environment and harsh
climate changes provide ideal training grounds.
Population Served
Fort Richardson serves more than 8,000 Active Duty,
National Guard and Reserve Soldiers. The installation supports
over 2,000 retirees, 11,000 family members on and off the
installation and more than 1,700 civilians.
Base Transportation
Currently, there is no base transportation on this
installation.
Sponsorship
If you are on assignment to USARAK and have not been
contacted by your sponsor, you may contact Enlisted Strength
Management at (907) 384-1967 or DSN 317-384-1967. Your sponsor
will be able to give you up-to-date information on mailing
addresses.
Temporary Quarters
Single Soldiers and unaccompanied Sergeants and below will
report in to the Military Personnel Division in Building 600
for room assignments. Single and accompanied Staff Sergeants
and above will report in to Fort Richardson Lodging in
Building 600 for assignments. Lodging can be arranged in
advance by calling (907) 384-0436 or DSN 317-384-0436.
Relocation Assistance
The Military Personnel Division provides every Soldier
with a Welcome Packet immediately upon arrival and
in-processing with information on relocation services and the
Lending Closet. The Army Community Service Relocation
Readiness Program Manager and Lending Closet are located in
room A139, Building 600, (907) 384-1515 or DSN 317-384-1515.
Critical Installation Information
Exceptional Family Member Program Fort Richardson
is considered an overseas assignment for purposes of the
Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). Service members
requesting command sponsorship must have their family members
screened for enrollment in the EFMP. Screening ensures that
any specialized medical or educational needs can be met at
Fort Richardson or in the neighboring community. During the
EFMP screening process, the Army Medical Activity will
identify any special medical needs for family members to
ensure those services are available through military medical
facilities or local Tri-Care providers. The screening process
should be initiated at the current duty station 3 to 6 months
prior to the permanent change of station move. For further
information, contact the Fort Richardson Army Community
Service EFMP Manager at (907) 384-0225.
Winters in Alaska can be harsh. Proper winter clothing
is essential, i.e., coats, hats, gloves and boots. Summer
evenings may be as chilly as 50 degrees. Families should bring
light jackets or wear layered clothing when reporting during
summer months.
Getting Here by POV, you have two choices: The Alaska
Marine Highway (a ferry system) or the Alaska Canadian
Highway.
If
you choose the Alaska Marine Highway (ferry), contact
your local transportation office for details, or call
1-800-642-0066. When making reservations, consider traveling
on the ferry. During May-September you may take the route
leaving Washington State to Juneau then Seward, Alaska. You
can then drive the two hours to Fort Richardson.
Transporting your POV on the ferry is considered a POV
shipment. You can ship a second POV on the ferry at your
expense.
Traveling the Alaska Canadian (ALCAN) Highway is an
adventure. Pre-planning is the key to a successful, safe,
and enjoyable trip. Seasonal changes, road conditions,
lodging and personal finances are some of the most important
things to consider. Have your vehicle thoroughly inspected
by a qualified mechanic and complete all repairs prior to
traveling the ALCAN. Repairs on the ALCAN can be limited and
very expensive.
Service members or family members planning to travel through
Canada (leisure or official travel) must have in their
possession either a picture ID or birth certificate for each
child. Parents with legal custody of children must have
custody papers in their possession. Parents accompanying
children but traveling separately from their spouses must
possess a notarized power of attorney giving them
authorization for the travel.
Service members traveling through Canada with children other
than their own must have a notarized power of attorney from
the child's parents or legal guardian that authorizes the
child to accompany the service member.
Canada has very strict firearm laws. You must declare ALL
firearms at the border. Handguns may NOT be transported in
your vehicle. Standard rifles may be transported if ammunition
is separate from the rifle. A weapons fee will be charged. For
additional customs information, call the Canadian Border
Patrol at (867) 862-7230.
Wildlife is abundant in the state of Alaska, however,
it should be observed from a distance. Moose and bears
frequent on and off-post locations and should not be
approached or fed. Calving of moose occurs during May and
early June. Both Moose and bears will charge if they are
scared or are protecting their young. State of Alaska law
prohibits feeding of wildlife with a fine of up to $1,500 for
violations.
